Just as Chinese silk was introduced into Rome, nutmeg and mace were probably well known to the Romans - Pliny seems to have described these spices in Historia Naturalis (Natural History). Like silk, the origin of these spices is beyond the understanding of Western people, and the journey to deliver to the Middle East and Europe is long, dangerous, winding, and of course too expensive. As the export market for nutmeg and mace expanded throughout the ancient and medieval times, the islands of the spice were so prosperous that they dominated most of the Molucca group. For example, Ternate dominated Ceram as a much larger island, until the Dutch appeared. Although the Banda people are skilled in growing spices, they rarely trade them outside of their islands. Perhaps the descendants of South Island sailors with lighter skin color, especially the legendary Bugis from the large island of Sulawesi (located between Java and the Spice Islands), carried the spice away from Molucca to Java and Sumatra, from then to China, India, and finally Europe.
